by posted 02/02/2010

Cure Me I'm Irish is inspired by William Lacey, a five-year-old Braintree resident. Will was seven months old when doctors discovered a tumor in his chest in March 2005.When Will was two, doctors at Dana Farber deemed his cancer incurable. Now a kindergarten student in Braintree, Will continues his brave fight for life through countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries and clinical trials.

The Braintree Police and Braintree Fire will play a charity hockey game to benefit the Cure Me I'm Irish Founrdation on  February 21st at 6 P.M. at Zapustas Rink in Randolph. Tickets will be available at the door.

Great News and Appreciation

Tommy Troy is doing much better. He has turned the corner and has made significant progress getting himself back to the Tommy Troy we all know and love. Although Tommy has a difficult road ahead of him he is expected to make a full recovery.

The Troy family would like to express their sincere appreciation of the unbelievable support, generosity and well wishes through a very difficult time. The Troy’s are part of the BYH family and many of you were there for the family in a time that they needed it the most. The outpouring of support was incredible, noticed and dearly appreciated. Please continue to keep the Troy’s in your prayers.

HOCKEY IS A LOOONG SEASON……………IF YOUR CHILD SHOWS ANY SYMPTONS OF THE FLU……………..PLEASE KEEP HIM/HER HOME TO REST.

 BYH Board of Directors

Know the Difference between a Cold and H1N1 Flu Symptoms:

Symptom

Cold

H1N1 Flu

BYH 3 on 3 Instructional Hockey with REVISED Schedule
by posted 11/15/2009

BYH Instructional Hockey is going to 3 on 3 Cross Ice !!!!

See schedule of ice times for full season at bottom of this notification !

Instructional Hockey should provide the fundamental skills necessary to excel in the sport of hockey. The focus should be on skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, basic positioning, hockey rules and most importantly---FUN!

Traditional “full ice” hockey games allow only 20-30 seconds of puck handling per game. Full ice hockey games, although entertaining, do not provide the best training for beginning hockey players. To provide the hockey fundamentals that kids need, BYH Instructional hockey will adopt a “3 on 3 Cross Ice” format.

Register by clicking the Register Online link (left side menu)

Cross Ice Hockey

Cross Ice Hockey is designed to maximize the development of the skills necessary to allow continued improvement in the traditional game of hockey.  The cross ice hockey game is played across the width in one zone. There is no stoppage of play and no checking.  This game encourages quick footwork, slick stick handling and, most importantly of all, quick thinking!

Only 6, not 10, kids will be in the game at any one time. Quick changes @ 1-2 minutes and coaches will match up kids at appropriate level to be sure the kids are playing at proper level.

Gatorade after the game, $1 ……Playing against your buddies……priceless !!!

Full equipment is required. You can get youth equipment package deals at Powerplay Sports in Braintree
(2 Garden Park, 2nd Floor, p  781 - 848 -5100).

Each player will receive a game shirt and socks will be made available for purchase at Power Play Sports. Players must be registered with USA Hockey.

Space will be limited so register as soon as possible so you don’t get iced out !!

3 on 3 Cross Ice added for all levels of BYH !!!!
by posted 11/15/2009

Braintree Youth Hockey has purchased more ice to make a 3 on 3 Cross Ice program available for all levels. The format will allow the kids to have fun and compete against their teammates while picking up the needed skills and abilities to improve. The program has allocated enough ice that kids will be afforded the opportunity to get in an extra skate a week without charging additional fees. This is a great opportunity for the kids within our program to enjoy themselves in a fun environment while helping them to improve.

 What is Cross Ice Hockey?

A program designed to further develop hockey skills and competitive team play for all players Cross Ice Hockey is designed to accelerate the development of an individual player's core ice hockey skills (skating, stick handling, passing and shooting) in a team oriented setting while keeping a fun and positive atmosphere on the ice.

How does it work?

The emphasis will be on FUN for all players while developing players’ core hockey skills. The game is played ACROSS the width of one zone. It is played 3 on 3 plus goaltenders if available as opposed to 6 players a side. Each coach will also be responsible for officiating the games. When goals are scored the puck remains in the net. The opposing coach throws a puck yelling “new puck!” into the center of the ice and play resumes immediately. If the puck leaves the playing area (from deflections or shot over the boards) a coach immediately throws another puck into the playing area yelling “new puck!” and play resumes.  The coach does not direct the puck to either team under any circumstances. The initial start of the game begins in the same fashion.

 Is Cross Ice Hockey New?

Cross Ice Hockey has been around for years in Europe, Canada and the Northern United States. US Hockey has been pushing programs to adopt the format to allow skills to develop at a much faster pace as players are skating a length of ice that is 85 feet as opposed to 200 feet.

Why should my son/daughter play Cross Ice Hockey?

Playing in smaller areas allows each player to experience:

MORE touches of the puck per player
MORE shooting, passing and scoring opportunities
MORE quick changes in direction, improving skating skills
MORE action for goaltenders due to increased shooting
LESS stopping of play allowing for MORE game action and fun

SSC Rule 19 (formerly 15A)
by posted 09/24/2009

Annually prior to the start of the hockey season, Braintree Youth Hockey is responsible to notify all families of children that participate in the South Shore Conference, advising them of rule 19 (formerly 15A. )

Braintree Youth Hockey is responsible for the behavior of the spectators from their town. If the spectators get unruly or abusive during a game, it is up to the discretion of the referee to stop the game and determine who is at fault. If it can be determined whom or what town is at fault they shall forfeit the game. If it cannot be determined who is at fault or it is unsafe to continue the game, it will be stopped and the Disciplinary Committee will make a decision.

A)    The SSC will establish a discipline committee to investigate and conduct a hearing if appropriate, concerning any major incident involving a spectator or parent. An officer of the SSC will chair the Discipline Committee. The discipline committee will be comprised of three members of the Executive board and two program directors on a rotating monthly basis.

A major incident shall be defined as, but not limited to, the use of obscene or vulgar language, verbal, physical abuse, taunting of players, coaches, officials and throwing of objects in the viewing area, team benches, or ice surface, etc.

When a major incident on the ice rink property used by the SSC involving a parent or spectator is brought to the attention of the SSC Executive Board by rink officials, ice officials (referees/time keepers), incident reports or other programs, the affected program will be notified by the SSC President or designee.

The program(s) will then have 48 hrs. to respond with a recommendation for discipline to the chairperson of the disciplinary committee. The program will identify everyone involved. If the program’s action is deemed acceptable, no further action shall be taken. If the chairperson of the disciplinary committee deems the program’s recommendation unacceptable and/or inadequate, the individuals involved will be immediately suspended from all South Shore Conference activities until the incident is resolved. The Disciplinary Committee shall convene to investigate the incident and to hold a hearing within one week. All parties involved in major incidents shall attend the disciplinary hearing.

Braintree Youth Hockey strives to project a positive image and give the kids an opportunity to play a great sport. It is imperative that all parents and spectators conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Keep in mind our actions are being watched by our children. Please set a good example and conduct yourself in a manner that reflects positively on your child and program.

Thank You,
Braintree Youth Hockey
